Every game of the Premiership on network television, something unseen for me in America in almost 20 years here. It’s a bit personal. Let’s just say that NBC’s gamble on trying to give Americans more “football” on a weekly basis is something unprecedented — but also very exciting for people like me who have trouble having to discuss the latest Premier League results in a casual conversation with most people on a day-to-day basis. Thanks NBC, for trying to make the lives of the “un-American soccer ball lovers” easier, because we appreciate it.
NBC’s advert “An American Coach In London” stars Jason Sudeikis (former Saturday Night Live actor) as the American coach in one of the Premiership’s biggest clubs, Tottenham Hotspur. The setting is in a press conference where “Coach Lasso” is introduced as the club’s new manager. Lasso plays out a series of humorous and unmistakably “American” clichés about English football. Some of the characterizations of training methods, rules of the game and football clubs that Lasso makes in the advert evoke the same characterizations and clichés Americans generally make about soccer.
