I Pompeys bissano il successo del 1939 superando il Cardiff grazie a un gol dell’ex interista Kanu. Primo trofeo in carriera per Redknapp.
Non passerà alla storia come una delle finali più spettacolari, anzi è una seria candidata alla palma della più sonnolenta. Ma la vittoria del Portsmouth sul Cardiff 1-0 grazie a un gol di Kanu ha tutte le caratteristiche che fanno della FA Cup un torneo unico.
Si trattava di un appuntamento con la storia per tutti i protagonisti. Per i gallesi, che giocano in B (la Championship), che col loro (unico) successo nel 1927, avevano costretto la Football association a cambiare nome alla coppa dalla stagione successiva: da English Cup a FA Cup. Per i grandi vecchi Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink e Robbie Fowler (convocato dopo cinque mesi di stop per infortunio ma poi, all’ultimo momento, non portato nemmeno in panchina). Per il Portsmouth e soprattutto per il suo manager Harry Redknapp, uno dei più popolari e di lungo corso, che per la prima volta in carriera aveva la possibilità di conquistare un trofeo. Anche i Pompeys avevano la loro bella dose di vecchie glorie: David James, Sol Campbell, Nwankwo Kanu. E proprio al centravanti nigeriano è toccato l’onore di firmare il successo della formazione del sud Inghilterra sfruttando un errore del portiere del Cardiff Enkelman a 8 minuti dalla fine del primo tempo. Duro colpo per i Bluebirds che dopo aver eliminato Chasetown, Hereford, Wolves, Middlesbrough e il Barnsley erano arrivati a Wembley con la convinzione di poter realizzare l’impresa. Ma l’attacco privo di Fowler e con un Hasselbaink quasi mai in partita non pungeva e impensieriva raramente la difesa avversaria. Per il Portsmouth un successo che premia la capacità di Redknapp di creare una squadra solida grazie a un riuscito mix tra carriere in declino rilanciate e giovani leoni (si è confermato tra i migliori l’ex Udinese Sami Muntari). Aveva fatto lo stesso al West Ham ai tempi di Di Canio ma non era mai riuscito ad andare al di à di buoni piazzamenti. Per il Portsmouth invece è il secondo successo dopo quello del 1939 sul Wolverhampton. LECHAMPIONS EUROPA
